Jacob Abel - Dale Coyne Racing - Will Power Indycar at Indianapolis 500 Practice
The buzz is well and truly underway for the 109th running of the Indy 500 at the Indianapolis motor speedway, the cathedral of speed. Come the 25th of May, 33 drivers will line the grid and receive the command to start their engines, all hoping to cement their name in the history books of America’s greatest race.
The standing after practice one.
With practice for the 500 kicking off on May 12th, the fight to make the top 33 grid has begun and the competition is fast. Although practice was delayed for the first couple of hour due to rain, many drivers still put up good speed on the 2.5 mile oval, with team Penske driver, Will Power posting the fastest lap of 227.026 mph.
For some drivers, the stakes couldn’t be higher, one such driver is reigning Indy 500 champion, Josef Newsgarden. The current champion stands the chance of making history by becoming the first driver to win his third straight Indy 500 race. If practice is anything to go by, Newgarden’s performance looked good coming in at second place. Barring any unforeseen mechanical issues or mistake, the reigning champion should have no issue making the grid for the big race come qualifying day.
Closing out the top five after practice are Alex Palou, a driver with four race wins already this season. Veteran and six times Indy car champion Scott Dixon sits in fourth and last year’s polesitter for the Indy 500, Scott McLaughlin rounds out the top five.
