The 23-year-old New-Zealander racer, Liam Lawson has had a torrid start to his fulltime F1 drive in Red Bull alongside reigning champion Max Verstappen.
Lawson replaced Sergio Perez after the Mexican struggled to tame the RB21 last year. After taking the seat of struggling Daniel Riccardo, a driver initially brought in to evaluate his suitability as an alternative to Perez in 2025 – Liam’s F1 career in the RedBull car is hanging in the balance after just two races.
An Unconvincing Start To The Season.
If reports from Dutch publisher, De Limburger are to be believed, senior RedBull executives held an urgent meeting to discuss the second seat beside Max Verstappen. The report suggest that Liam Lawson could lose his seat to junior team driver Yuki Tsunoda as early as the Japanese Grand Prix.
The Kiwi driver failed to put in a convincing lap to progress through to Q2 in Australia and crashed out of the race on Sunday. China was just as bad – with Liam qualifying at the back end of the grid and started from the pitlane on Sunday and finishing in P12 after the Ferrari duo of Leclerc and Hamilton alongside Alpine driver Gasly were disqualified from the race.
RedBull Reopens Negotiation With Honda Regarding Yuki Tsunoda Drive At RB.
Initially passed for the RB seat, Yuki Tsunoda is poised to replace Liam at his home race in Suzuka Japan. Reports have it RedBull have reopened negotiation with Honda to give Tsunoda the RB21 seat after initially declining Honda’s offer of €20 million for the Japanese driver to partner Verstappen.

Honda is reported to be paying RedBull €10 million a year for the Japanese driver’s seat at sister team VCARB. Its unclear how much Honda is willing to pay now after Yuki was passed for the seat in favour of Liam Lawson because Christian Horner did not believe Tsunoda had the mental capacity to drive alongside his four-time world champion driver Max Verstappen.
Shortest Career In A RedBull F1 Car.
If and when RedBull confirms the exit of Liam Lawson in place of Yuki Tsunoda before the Japanese grand prix, that will make Liam the shortest reigning RedBull driver in history. RedBull has cycled between drivers since Daniel Riccardo left the outfit at the end of the 2018 season.
Pierre Gasly got his shot at the senior team for the 2019 season and was subsequently demoted back to the junior outfit mid-season after just 12 races. Alex Albon fared a little better after replacing Gasly in the middle of the 2019 season. His career came to an end after the 2020 season after failing to match teammate Max Verstappen’s performance.
